Here at Oakwood University Church, we believe in nurturing and empowering our children from childhood to adulthood. It was young people like Ellen G. White, Uriah Smith, J. N. Andrews, to name a few, who made a significant impact on the developing Seventh-day Adventist Church while they were still teenagers and young adults.  As part of our mission, “to lead young people into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ and help them embrace His call to discipleship.” Oakwood University Church’s young adult ministries, ROOTED, caters to people from the ages of 24-38.

Dawnette Chambers, the current ministry leader, realized several programs for toddlers, teens, and seniors but none specifically for young adults. “There are many changes and phases that a person can go through during adulthood and it is hard to dig roots. One might have a hard time finding an accountability partner, someone to pray for you, and discipleship when you don’t have anyone to live life with,” said Chambers. This ministry not only offers young adults a safe space, but it also offers them a chance to build relationships with their peers.

The name “ROOTED,” inspired by Colossians 2: 7-9, “Rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.” Chambers believes that ROOTED in Christ, you will have love, joy, peace, and community.

In the next six months, Chambers is eager to see the fruitful relationships that have grown from attending various events hosted by the ministry. Her mission is to create a space here at OUC, where young adults feel they are a part of a community that supports them wholeheartedly while they strive to #MakeChristFirst.
